Professor Eur. Ing. Dr. Barrie William Jervis

Picture of Dr. Jervis

I am Professor of Electronic Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University, England, where I lecture on Electronic and Communication Engineering subjects , and supervise research on the Applications of Digital Signal Processing and Artificial Intelligence Techniques to circuit diagnosis and brain signal analysis for disease identification and quantification. Another interest is in the determination of the concentration of gases in a gas mixture (electronic noses).

I have degrees from the University of Cambridge in Natural Sciences (physics, mathematics, crystallography, metallurgy, and geology) and physics. My PhD was from the University of Sheffield, Department of Electronic and Electronic Engineering and the thesis was on indium phosphide microwave oscillators.

I am a European Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, a Chartered Engineer, and a Member of the British Society for Clinical Neurophysiology.

Other academic and research skills lie in microwave engineering , and semiconductor materials and devices .

My current list of publications is available (refereed journal articles, conference papers, and books).

I have been an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Pennsylvania State University, USA, have worked at Brainware an information technology company in Berlin, and have done research in the microelectronics laboratory at the University of Bordeaux .

I am very enthusiastic about the integration of Europe. Anyone who has travelled and worked in the USA can see the advantages of a large market and a common language. This interest is expressed through my efforts to arrange European student exchanges and my European research links. The aim of these is to spread some understanding between the peoples of Europe and to combine resources.

I also have significant experience of committee work and management.

I am pleased to tell you that my interests extend beyond matters technical to include languages, for I speak French and German, and I am a practising artist, painting oil and pastel landscapes. I have a number of scholastic qualifications .

I enjoy exercising my language skills when travelling to other countries on business or on holiday. I have travelled widely in Europe and the USA both by public transport and by car.

For relaxation and fitness I enjoy regular swimming and aerobics, and weekend hikes in the beautiful countryside of Derbyshire and Yorkshire.
