Microwave Research

Microwave Instrumentation (1982-3)

Invented a five-port combined reflectometer and frequency meter for use at microwave frequencies. This was intended as a comparatively cheap instrument for the measurement of the properties of microwave circuits and components. Acted as consultant to the Gabriel Manufacturing Company for its development. UK patent was applied for.

Microwave Radiometry (1983)

Contributions to the design of a 22.2 GHz microwave radiometer. Design of antenna system adjustable in elevation and azimuth. Improvements in data processing to increase the sensitivity. Carried out at Pennsylvania State University, USA.

Consultancy (1980-)

Have provided consultancy services to:

  1. Malati Electronics Ltd, (rf topic)
  2. Patscentre International (on microwave topics)
  3. A firm in Devon on the development of a new electronic product
  4. Gabriel Manufacturing Company. Microwave mixers, 5-port reflectometer and frequency meter.

Microwave Component Development 1980-82

Invention and development of a microstrip-based broadband attenuator (dc -20 GHz). UK and USA patents were applied for.

Microwave Measurements (1973-80)

  1. Microwave scattering measurements on grain and straw to detect grains in the straw ejected from a combine harvester. Experimental work and theoretical development.
  2. The simultaneous measurement of grain flow-rate and moisture content using a microwave Doppler-radar technique. Experimental work and development of the theory.
  3. Measurement of the dielectric permittivity of low-loss microwave substrates. Invention of experimental method and of the theory.
  4. Design of microstrip lines with very lossy substrates and measurements of the attenuation. Part of a project to design a novel microwave attenuator.

Microwave Devices (1969-72)

An investigation of indium phosphide microwave oscillators. Microwave cavity design, characterisation of device performance, and explanation of mode of operation.
